Not in the city but a great stay regardless!

On our recent trip to HCMC, we stayed at Somerset Vista twice. The first time for 9 nights and the second time for 8 nights. It was by choice that we selected to stay so far from the city and those looking at this hotel should know that District 2 is about a VND120,000-150,000 taxi ride to the city and takes about 15 minutes to get there.

We really enjoyed the location, however if you have no intention of renting a motor bike to get around, I can understand how this location might not be fabulous for you. That combined with the difficulty in getting there as most of the cab drivers know The Vista which is the residential towers within the same complex and are a little vacant when you say Somerset Vista. If in doubt, mention The Vista apartments as well as the VW dealership on the ground floor of the Somerset Vista building.

We have been to HCMC many times, but this is the first time staying so far out of the city. District 2 is the expat area of HCMC and there are many fabulous places to eat at in the Thao Dien Ward less than 5 minutes taxi ride from the hotel.

The serviced apartments themselves are incredibly clean and very comfortable. Our first stay, initially we were on a lower floor where the renovation noise carried through the walls unfortunately. This was not mentioned on their website at the time of booking as I booked direct through their website. Also there is much construction going on around outside the building as they are putting in a metro system. The staff were very quick to respond in moving us to a quieter apartment. Also making note that upon our return to ensure that we were allocated a quiet apartment again. The only downfall is the drainage issue for some of the apartments. Our second stay, the shower to the master did not drain properly as the shower floor was not installed with a gradient descending towards the drain so stale water would pool on the other half of the shower. Also whilst there are windows, there does not appear to be exhaust fans in the bathrooms.

They offer shuttles into the city at certain intervals throughout the day however there is no service to get you back from the city.

If you're wanting to stay in the heart of HCM, The Ascott group do have another hotel called Somerset HCM that is located in District 1. But for our family, we would happily stay in District 2 again as it is a really nice luxurious part of HCMC and Somerset offered great facilities at good prices for the area.
Great place for family travel with kids

They have chopping board (kitchen) for us to eat the local fruits when we bought it home from the wet market behind the hotel using the hotel bicycle for 100% Vietnamese experience. We can carry less cloth because we can wash the kids cloth using their Electrolux washing machine and dryer all in once, very convenience for a travelling family, at least my wife is satisfied withe cloth cleaning things. (They have bicycle with baby sitter)
    Our Tour Group

We went as a big group. Generally, the hotel is excellent. Somerset has spacious rooms and excellent facilities, good service too! The receptionists are so helpful and accomodation. The location is also good though it is not on the city itself transportation is not a problem. We never regret choosing this hotel.
Nice highway view. Far from the main city.

If you like to stay most of your time relaxing in your apartment room maybe this is the place. It's in District 2 which is separated from District 1 (the main city & where everything is goin on) by the Saigon river. Took about 20-40 minutes by cab to get to the city. Not recommended. But service is alright. Big swimming pools but too many noisy kids in the evening cause the playground is just next to it. And at least they have a washer machine in the kitchen's apartment. Also, the cab driver might take you through the inner construction road(instead of the highway) which is really bad in condition & bumpy that your car almost flip over.
    Excellent Property

This service apartment is just wow. New looking facilities, spacious, clean, new and nice furnishings & amenities. This is one of the best Somerset facilities stayed in, and this even beats 5 and 6 star hotels. Will definitely stay here again.
Very good serviced apartment, also for long-stay

I’m living here since 1 year and I had a VERY GOOD and FRIENDLY experience!
There are different size of apartments. Mine has a big living room, 3 bedrooms quite wide, master one very big with own bathroom with a wonderful shower. The kitchen is full furnished, with good household appliances (microwave, oven, washer/dryer machine) .The balcony is tiny but with a clotheshorse where to dry the clothes. In the master bedroom there is a flat TV too and an alarm clock with I-phone/I-pad charger.
Housekeeping every day, they usually don’t speak English but try to satisfy your request in anyway.
Facilities: gymnasium with all Technogym furniture, 3 pools (1 of 50 mt long + 2 for kids) + whirlpool, sauna + steam room, playground for little kids (unfortunately no space for bigger ones). All is FREE, in others hotels you have to pay for that.
Nice view from our 24th floor, pool side. All the room has a complete window wall.
There is a market downstairs with a lot of international food, coffee shops, ice cream shop, restaurants and bakery
Always Vinasun taxi available. The outside of the lobby has a roof, very useful in case of rain!
A shopping mall and a big Metro store on the other side of the highway but you need the taxi (1USD) to go, cross the street is very dangerous!
20 minutes from the District 1 (center city) with a free shuttle bus service 3 times a day!
Free bicycles to go in 5 minutes to the next An Phu Ward, a crowd part of District 2 with a lot of foreigners, full of shops and good restaurants.
Near to some good international schools with a bus service.
Sometimes the staff organize cooking class, nights music or theme party and fairs.
In the near Vista complex there are languages classes for adults and children, an amazing Elf Village for kids with art and cooking activities (good idea also for birthday parties).
For the breakfast they provide vouchers for the near good bakery/restaurant.
Only few suggestions to improve even more the service are:
A fan in the kitchen because cooking the room becomes very hot
Housekeeping sometimes has to pay more attention on the cleaning details
The gym guy should speak more English and other courses could be offered, not only yoga
The water in the pool is too cold
To keep clean the outside of the windows
The smoke should be banned in every floor! if someone smokes outside his room, the smell remains in the level, going in the other rooms and the elevator, and remained there for a long time
Vietnam is always noisy, here the noise is also due to the building of the new Metro line and tracks on the highway that hank during the night too.
The sign with the SOMERSET name should be more visible from the entrance street, not every taxi driver knows where it is.
At the end, if I can stay in Vietnam more time, I'll still stay here. And my close friend usually looks for this hotels chain when she travel around the Asia.
Best value 5 star hotel/ resident service in HCMC

We got 3 day and 2 night stayed at the Somerset Vista in 2nd District in HCMC. The 3 bedroom apartment was huge, fully equipped with 5* luxury equipment and so the service. There are 3 pools in the complex with the main pool is massive 50 meter long clean and the view from 23rd floor is spectacular day or night. The Somerset Vista is 10' drive by taxi (USD7) from the centre city and there are good restaurants and shop around to eat and shop. Compared to the 5* hotel in the centre of Saigon the Somerset Vista still much cheaper and better equipped which makes it the best value for our stayed. We would come back to stay here again when we visit Saigon in the future
    Good apartment but poor service

This is the second time I chose service apartment instead of hotel for my trip in Ho Chi Minh city, as I believe that it will be more comfortable. I read the review from Tripadvisor and got to know that Somerset Vista seem to be a good choice, so I decided to try it out.

I initially booked two separate reservations (2 nights + 1 night), as the reservation staff told me that they could only offer in-house rate, and if I want the extension night on the special offer i.e. online member rate, I have to book it online and they could easily combine them. I totally understand it, and booked it accordingly. The reservation staff then advised that she has combined both reservations, and assured that I will get the same room. The overall experience with the reservation team was flawless, as she was efficient, helpful and friendly.

The disappointment started when I was on the taxi trying to locate the hotel.
    - The signage is too small, and we could hardly identify it. The lobby is small too.
    - I walked towards the reception desk and asked for check-in. The reception staff presented me a registration card for 2 nights only, and what about the last night, I asked. He didn't seem aware of that I got an extension night with them. I requested him to check under my name. He then confirm that I have an extension night, but I may have to change room. I was a bit upset, and told him what the reservation and I have been communicated, she confirmed that I do not need to change room. He spent a while to check on it, and said okay, you could stay in this room for 3 nights straight. Problem settled after long while - disappointed!
    - I then asked the front desk staff if I got the chance for room upgrade, as it is part of the benefits of my reservation. He stunned for a while, and responded that upgrade is subjected to availability. I asked, so does it mean today there is no availability for upgrade? He answered my room is the BEST among all the same apartment type (2-bedroom Executive). I gave up and just accepted.
    - I went up to the apartment, it was nice, spacious, and very clean, look cozy. I love it. My cousin and I put down our stuffs, turn on the air-con in the living room, and went down to the supermarket for some groceries. 30 minutes later, we came back to the apartment and realised that the air-con right on top of the TV is leaking terribly. I immediately called for maintenance, and waited for about 15 minutes, the technician guy arrived. I asked him how long does he needs to fix the issue, he advised around 20 - 30 minutes. At the time, I was really exhausted and just couldn't wait to have a rest. I called the front desk asking for a room change. The same guy refused to make a room change for us and gave some unacceptable excuses. I didn't let go this time, and requested him to check with the manager. He came back to me after about 8 minutes, and said that "oh, we can do a room change for you, but you need to come back to the lobby, and get your new keys, please remember to pack all your stuffs". This should not be the service I could receive from a 5-star service apartment, I have never been experienced such terrible service from elsewhere, this is the fault from the hotel's room, so I expect the hotel staffs to come up and assist us with the room change instead of us going down. Am I too difficult?
    - Shifted to the another apartment, this is obviously better than the last one especially the view (well, the front desk lied to me!!). Unfortunately, as we requested for the change, thus the welcome fruits will never arrived after we moved. Such a shame!
    - Housekeeping service is not good enough, as they are not thorough, they will not clean your room even when you hang the card "please tidy my apartment". You have to call them and make them aware that you need your apartment tidy up. One of the nights, they didn't clean off the trash in one of the bins. We asked them to change the new shower gel, it didn't happen.

Apart from the above-mentioned disappointment. The apartment is really good, with a fully furnish kitchen (my family loved it). The beds are very comfortable. The location is a bit off; however, it is not that far from the airport, and the hotel offered shuttle service to District 1.

Please improve your service, if you'd like to have more return business.
    Not appropriate for long-stay visits

Be aware that this serviced apartment facility is not appropriate for long stays for the following reasons:
    - Very poor location in District 2 in Vietnam. The approach is with bumpy roads to use to go to and from the property.
The traffic is tremendous each morning, easily avoidable when you use Riverside serviced apartment.
    - Very poor washer/dryer quality, will tear your clothes. And no place to hang clothes.
    - Very poor cleaning service, and done every day at different times so no planning possible.
    - Very unfriendly neighbours, mostly those who will dash for the elevator even if they were last in line, or push your children to make their way
    - Very poor management, with poor Wifi service, water maintenance without warning (to finally make my shower not workable).
    - Poorly trained staff, who shout and scream their way up the main lift, without giving way to guests.
    - Very noisy! I was warned of this, but coming from a developing country, I thought that would be manageable. I was very wrong. My child woke up most nights when the trucks honked loudly at 4am each day.
    - The swimming pool takes away most of the play area for children, and is cleaned during peak hours, not paying heed to the swimmers inside.

We came with our dog, who was first 'not allowed' as he was above 2kgs. We wonder which dog is below 2kgs, besides 1% of the breeds. When he was 'allowed' they wrongly claimed us for wooden floor damages, which had been already made by the previous tenant.

One can maybe tolerate this property for a weekend, but definitely not friendly or professional enough for longer stays. I say this after staying in this property for 60 days.
    Wonderful Hotel

I was part of a medical team that traveled to Ho Chi Minh City, and during our trip we stayed at several hotels in Vietnam, but this one was by far the best. The rooms were large, clean, and well furnished. The washer/dryer was especially nice to have. The staff were helpful and polite, and spoke very good English. There is also a grocery store and some restaurants within walking distance of the hotel.
