A very nice place to stay in the Mekong

Very good resort with a brilliant swimming pool and excellent pool. We had a great English speaking guide from whom we learnt a lot. Very recommended if you wish to learn more about life in the Mekong.
    Butlins in the Mekong
    |

First the positive - the new pool is stunning and with fabulous views of the river. In fact, you may wish to just relax and enjoy the view of river life from the lounger. But no, this place is very regimented. You are expected to report for dinner at a certain time, be ready for a tour at a certain time etc. We were taken across the river to a village where we wandered past some shops and were sat down to endure an appallingly touristy play. No insight into village life whatsoever. It was so tragic but could have been so interesting.

I think basically the guides are rolling out the same activities avery day at the same times and frankly they must be bored senseless.

There was quite a bit of travelling to get here from HCM and in retrospect given a tight schedule to pack everything in that Vietnam has to offer I would have axed this. We did a Les Rives tour by boat to Cu Chi tunnels from HMC and I would do a day trip with them instead. This was quite expensive really for what it was.

I almost forgot to mention the karaoke noise. This started early afternoon on the day we arrived and never ended until the early hours. This is such a shame for the hotel as it completely ruins the ambience and feeling that you are away from it all. You obviously aren't when you can hear that.
    Great location

We had a nice stay at the lodge. The location is beautiful near the mekong delta. The trips we made were well organized. Our guide was very clear in stating the right time for a trip. Also the swimming pool is a nice place for relaxation between our trips.

The lodge was fine, it is clean and has airco. The only downsite was during the night, rats were walking in the top of the lodge making a lot of noise.
A haven on the Mekong Delta.

After a short boat ride down river, you arrive at Mekong Lodge, a little haven surrounded by all manner of tropical fruit trees and lush vegetation. We booked a two night three day package which included cycle trips, village visits and cooking classes. We loved being able to cycle through quiet villages off the tourist trail and travel with the locals on the small ferry. Our guide Khoa was excellent and really informative. The food at the lodge is excellent, perhaps too much at times, and the staff are very helpful and welcoming. We really appreciated having a beautiful pool to dive into at the end of the excursions with a lovely view of the Mekong. As you are in a rural setting, don't be surprised to be woken up by the wildlife in the early hours, but that is part and parcel of the location.
    Tears of Joy
    |

When we arrived at Mekong Lodge we were blown away by the sheer beauty of the environment and the warm hospitality of the staff.
We really appreciated the opportunity to step into Vietnamese rural life by taking the cycle tour around the local laneways to see where and how the locals lived.
There were no crowds of tourists and we felt like travellers passing through getting an insight into an authentic Vietnamese community.
This was also true of our tour of the local market.
The food provided was of a good standard, we enjoyed our cooking lesson.
We would not hesitate to very highly recommend Mekong Lodge.
And yes, there were tears of joy on arrival!

Rural and luxury in riverside Delta
    |

The lodges are located on the bank of the Mekong River. Picked up at the small habour at Cai Be, a small Vietnamese boat will take you to the Mekong Lodge. Arriving at the lodge, staff is welcoming you and taking you to your lodge. The lodges are set in beautiful surroundings, the interior of the lodges is near to perfect. A guide will take you cycling and to the regular floating market, is there during cooking class and helps out anyway possible. The food they serve is delicious. We had a wonderful time, so good even that we booked an extra night.
    Partly insufficient
    |

Let's start with the good thing: The cycling and the market tour were fine, and our guide offered perfect information. The rest should have been like this. It failed. Mekong Lodge is an inconsistent place. Located on the river bank, with wonderful garden, big pool, restaurant, nice bungalows ... sounds perfect for some relaxing days. But their main business is package, i.e.: program, program, and program. Customer size is not their strongest skill. It's impossible to book only the room, you have to book full board. Even when you want to skip lunch you have to pay for it. The food is not bad, sometimes too much. "Package" means organized activities at fixed times: visit to Cai Be floating market (a small one), cycling, and cooking class (basic). Pickup and drop-off at HCMC is possible, but again: only at fixed times. The driving from HCMC to the Lodge was like sitting in a cocktail shaker. God knows why they were in hurry. We had booked and paid 4 nights in a river view bungalow with a small private pool. Once we arrived we were guided to a room with garden view. No river, no pool. We reclaimed. Somebody told us that in about half an hour our bungalow could be ready. Meanwhile a coffee could be offered – and should be paid by ourselves! Strange customer service. We refused. The bungalow was nice, but no private safe, no telephone, no freeze, no kettle. (In some of the upgrade bungalows there is even no WIFI.) Instead there were rats on the roof and in the bathroom, you could smell their piss. Now the games went on: Some official claimed it were pigeons, which is ridiculous since pigeons are not active at night and don't drop black feces on your floor. Finally the owner admitted that they have problems with rats because of the river, but they should not be aggressive. What a relief! He then offered another bungalow at the end of the lot, dark and beside the garbage drain... No more rats, except in the last night. But it's the river, isn't it? Mekong Lodge is not a jungle lodge, and "river view" means beautiful view to the river as well as noise from the ships. If you look for quietness ask for a garden room. We LOVED the river and did not care about the noise, in fact, the river was why we booked. The staff is nice and sometimes overcharged, cleaning is okay. Breakfast is good and tightly organized: they advise you to a chair, no way to choose your own. Some information of the package summary is euphemistic: our "full morning boat trip" to Cai Be lasted two hours. All together Mekong Lodge it's a possibility for staying near some river (it is not the Mekong, but some tributary) with tough guidelines and limited flexibility. Better communicate your needs in advance and check quality, since it's not cheap: one night for 2 persons is an average monthly salary in Vietnam. One minute before departure they demanded 15'000 dong (sic) for a broken water glass. We never experienced such gesture in any uprange hotel around the world – but maybe Mekong Lodge is merely middlefield. If you love tightly organized days, go there. Otherwise look somewhere else.
    Pleasant stay in Mekong Delta
    |

I found the Mekong Lodge through an Internet search and was worried that it would not live up to my hopes, but it was as pretty as the pictures - gorgeous pool and attractive thatched cottages set in gardens alongside the river - and we enjoyed our stay. Mr Tan was very responsive to our requests - we needed to make changes to room numbers and transportation needs - and our guide Khoa (Qha?) was friendly and helpful. The cycling trips were fun despite some rain and rutted paths - but I could have missed the more "programmed" elements that reminded us we were tourists being processed through a sausage machine. I found the cooking demo a bit weak - throwing bottled sauces over the food? Really? - and the food in general a bit bleuh, but overall have fond memories of our August stay and would recommend the Mekong Lodge for a pleasant couple of days.
    Wonderful hotel and excursions
    |

We booked a 2 day, 1 night stay through Impress travel and would highly recommend it. Despite being very reasonably priced the hotel was of a superb quality similar to other resorts charging double the price. We visited in the low season which meant that 90% of the time we had the huge river-view swimming pool all to ourselves and the whole resort was very quiet and peaceful. Amazing food and the excursions that we were taken on by our guide Hau were some of the most authentic and non-touristy that we experienced in Vietnam. The highlight was being taken on a leisurely stroll through the local market, our guide showing us local products and buying us deep-fried bananas (delicious) - it was an experience that I never would have tried on our own but he made it fascinating because he genuinely wanted to share the local culture with us.

The only small downside that we experienced was that during the night there were a couple of rats running about in the roof of our lodge. There is no way that could have got into the room however the noise was a little disconcerting. Also prepare to be woken in the early hours by roosters who crow throughout the day, people unused to this may find it a bit irritating.
Mekong Lodge Rural & River Life in the Delta
    |

Do you like the sound of hens clucking and roosters crowing? The blast of a boat horn on a busy rural river? Riding along dusty, winding tracks waving hello to the locals and checking out the local farms and businesses?

Mekong Lodge is the place to stay.

Everything is included, meals and personalised tours and no problem to arrange a private mini-van to collect us from Chau Doc and bring us to Cai Be and also our transfer to Ho Chi Minh at the end of our stay!

Short journey by boat and our guide there to assist us with anything we needed.

Sadly the plunge pools in front of the rooms have gone but the swimming pool right on the river soon helped wash away the grime and heat from our journey.

The rooms are in thatched bungalows and quite spacious, excellent airconditioning and every evening mosquito nets are placed around your bed.

Outdoor bathroom, with unique wooden tub and overhead shower, toilet and washbasin. Due to the humidity at the time of our visit, it was a little uncomfortable at times but once back in the aircon, phew, all good!

It was great to see the young local employees making a big effort to ensure we were enjoying our meals. And the little extras before the meals of carrott carving and a short cooking class were fun.

Mekong Lodge is proud to show you around the surrounding villages and help you learn and understand their history, culture and lifestyle. Staying here, for us, is a reminder of what travel is all about. Thank you Duck :)

If noise is an issue.... well, here's a tip: roosters don't just crow when the sun comes up! ;)
