Cosy bungalow village right by the sea

Despite being a very rainy day when we stayed, I can imagine this place is just glorious in the sunshine.

The receptionist assistant was very friendly. The breakfast was good in the restaurant. The beach is really beautiful just outside Mai House and there is a lovely private area with sun loungers on a raised platform next to the sea.

The rooms were large, with an amazing shower room. The room had a real rustic feel to it, but needed some updating.

I loved the location of this place on Long Beach. There were windy streets with restaurants and shops around. But they were pricey. However even the street market (3 mins away by taxi) was expensive for food in comparison to the rest of Vietnam. We ordered an iced coffee from the hotel and it was 50VD each! Shocker! (usually 20-30VD)
    Great beaches, food and service

Stayed here with a group of friends in Nov 2014. I have not one bad word to say about the place. Everywhere was clean and tidy, reception staff were great and the rooms were ideal. We ate food at the resort 2 times and both time the food was great. The beach was clean and overlooked the sun set which was amazing.
    A little bit of paradise!

Beach front bungalows, attractive and well-maintained, dot the property. Air-conditioned with large bathrooms and porches. Very gracious staff at included breakfast. We also enjoyed several dinners here, as well. The staff couldn't do enough!! All very helpful, kind and accommodating! Very well priced for what you receive.
Stunningly beautiful property, lovely service, excellenet barbeque night

We saw pictures of Mai House online and decided to add a day trip. Then we read the reviews and added another day. In all, we spent four blissful days here and it exceeded our expectations. The photos of the property don't really do it justice because it is just so large and sprawling. The beachfront is wide and lovely, with palm trees, sand, deck chairs, and a lovely restaurant with a panoramic view of the ocean. The rooms are little cottages ensconced in lush tropical plants. The bathrooms are large, comfortable and well-appointed. The food is spectacular. The barbecue spread is impressive and very well-priced, as are the drinks. The complimentary daily cocktails do a great job of getting you out to the restaurant for the sunset, and the pepper pot rice we could not get enough of. If we ever go back to Vietnam it will be to recreate our time at Mai House.
    Perfect Start to Our Vacation!

We only had one night here, but it was the perfect start to our trip! We had a beach view bungalow and were glad we spent the extra money on it. The breakfast was awesome, and they even let us check in at 9 a.m. when we arrived and gave us breakfast vouchers for then and the next day. We had a great time relaxing on our porch and sitting on the beach. We wish we could have stayed longer and can't wait to go back. Worth the trip from HCMC even if its just for a night!

After the bustle and busy of Hanoi we travelled to phu quoc and stayed at Mai house. We read others reviews and were worried about mosquitos. My husband and I stayed there with our 3 year old son for 4 nights. We stayed close to the beach. It was amazing! Warm calm water, great beach, great fresh food ( we ate every day and night there), fantastic staff and fabulous bungalows. An amazing experience. There really weren't any negatives so be careful not to dwell on any petty negative reviews otherwise you could miss something truly special. We will be back! Yes there are a few Mosquitos but not enough to spoil anything. Just make sure you wear mosquito repellent at night and ask the reception for coils. A coil at the front door actually kept Mosquitos away nicely. Some of the doors and windows have gaps so I asked for some tape from the desk snd I just ran a bit of tape over a few gaps so mozies didn't bother us at night at all. If you can add a roll of painters tape to your luggage you can pretend you are mc gyvere in paradise. We went in May and we were practically the only ones there. It was divine. I have no idea why it wasn't full!
We dined on the beach at night under the stars.
I have only one issue and that would be directed to tourists. Pick up your cigarette butts and rubbish after yourself! It's quite disgusting that tourists litter the beautiful beach mostly further down the beach. I spent a little time collecting rubbish off the beach with my son. A little disappointed to see a polluted waterway at the side of Mai house and hoping the rubbish didn't reach the ocean. Mai house you are so beautiful, the string of beach side resorts should get onto keeping and enforcing a rubbish free beach/environment. Tourists!!! Respect this beautiful place!

We stayed at Mai House for 6 nights in April 2015 (low season).

Having read the reviews on TripAdvisor we appreciated accommodation prices were high on Long Beach and should not expect too much from the resort.

Here are our pros and cons...

    1. Good stretch of beach
    2. Great breakfast
    3. Free cocktail/mixer each evening
    4. Good location...beach bars, shops, tour operators, motorbike hire close by
    5. Room clean and tidy...no sign of bugs and rats mentioned in other reviews!
    6. Very good air con
    7. Room turned down twice a day

    1. Our £80 a night beach view bungalow had unkept gardens and no path
    2. Teenage restaurant staff were more interested in watching YouTube videos on their phones (often hiding on the floor behind the bar so you couldn't see them) than serving paying guests. Resort definitely in need of a manager to keep the kids motivated. Often felt like I was intruding when entering the bar area
    3. No 'guest house/hotel' feel of any kind. We visited other resorts away from Long beach and their staff were attentive, offered free tours, movie nights etc for their guests for half the price we paid at Mai House
    4. Of the 7 days we were at Mai House we only saw a staff member put the sun loungers and covers out once (whilst the owner was on site). Every other day they were strewn around the place left for guests to organise
    5. Other than transactional requests (ordering drinks etc) we had no contact with Mai House staff which left us feeling like they really didn't care about their guests.
    6. Beach isn't swept by Mai House staff in the morning.

    A beautiful spot

As it was our final destination in Vietnam, my boyfriend and I were prepared to splash the cash while in Phu Quoc - after reviewing all of the hotels we actually decided on Mai House.

Whilst not the most expensive or luxurious, Mai House seemed to us the most beautiful spot with lush garden and huts only a minute from the beach.

We weren't disappointed - Mai House really is beautifully situated. Watching the sunset on our balcony with a glass of wine we had to lunch ourselves! The spot also feels more natural compared to others, with palm trees, rattan umbrellas and very little development.

The huts are well spaced so the resort feels very quiet and less 'touristy' as a result. We had the hut with the sea view closest to the restaurant - I'd recommend paying a little more for this as the view from the balcony was very special.

The service is good but not fussy - they don't have the mod cons that you might enjoy at a pricier hotel. If you rely on your creature comforts you might be better off at The Terrace next door. For example, there is a small fridge but it's only powered when you're there (you need the key card) which is a problem if you want to enjoy cold drinks on the comfort of your own balcony. There is no mini bar, fruit etc.

The food in the restaurant is excellent and you can dine on the beach which is incredibly romantic and great for couples.

Only gripe would be that a few things lacked as we were there 'out of season (end of May). The spa was closed, they'd run out of many spirits and the beach was a bit dirty. Everything else I was fine with but you would expect them to keep the beach clean - considering how beautiful the resort is this was a bit of a disappointment.

All in all we enjoyed our stay and would return although perhaps in high season.
Extensive building work and rats in the rafters

We booked 2 nights in a superior garden view bungalow. On arrival we were shocked to be shown to a bungalow opposite a building site (we have posted a picture). We could not understand how they thought this would be acceptable. When we questioned staff we were told work started at 7am and went on until 5pm. We asked to move. At first they showed us to other bungalows on the row behind but these were still easily in hearing distance of the building work. They then upgraded us to a sea view bungalow, which we accepted after being told someone would deal with the large swarm of small flies on the terrace but no one did.

The bungalows are very comfortable, spacious and the bathrooms are nice and clean. There is air con and hot water. Unfortunately, we were woken to the sound of rats running across the rafters scratching and squeaking. It felt like they were right next to you. At 5am we got up and tried to find someone who could help us. We found one lady at the restaurant who said reception didn't open until 8am but she would call them and get them to help then. By 9am no one had come and after breakfast we had to seek someone out.
The resort itself is very neglected. We read before coming that it was designed to fit in with its surroundings but that doesn't excuse the general messiness and lack of maintenance. Deckchairs strewn around everywhere with no padding on, further building work (including opposite our upgraded room as well!) with lots of random piles of bricks and large piles of drying palm leaves (more pictures added). The sea was full of rubbish, which was also washing up on shore. This is a problem in some areas of Phu Quoc but in other resorts we have seen staff clearing up and managing this. There was no attempt at Mai House so you had to swim surrounded by rubbish.

Minor pluses are that there is a free pool table, cheap beer and a good breakfast but generally we cannot understand all the good reviews. This place is massively over priced, not looked after and currently not in a fit state for guests. We stayed only one night, which was one night too many. There are MUCH better places to stay including Arcadia next door, which unfortunately was fully booked when we checked out. We were not offered any discount and the reception staff refused to contact the owner when we said we were unhappy paying the full amount for our one night stay after our experiences. They said they offered us a 10% discount on booking and then the free upgrade but this discount was the low season rate, we were not told this meant building work and as we shared our upgraded room with rats we did not consider this fair compensation. This is the first hotel we have ever left early.
    Great beach!

This hotel was perfect for us. It's in a good location with a private beach and great restaurant. It's close enough to town to go to the night market but far enough away from all the hustle and bustle. We booked directly through the hotel and when we arrived they gave us a free upgrade to a beach room! It was the closest cottage to the beach so we could see the ocean from our bed. Reception and restaurant staff were so friendly and polite. Drinks from the bar were delicious. We had laundry done and came back beautifully clean and within a few hours. Definitely would recommend this hotel to anyone.
