Cat Ba Beach Resort is on a lovely SMALL cove. But it is not a private beach for guests only. The photos are very deceptive. There are very few sun loungers and sun shades and outsiders can rent them as well (free for hotel guests at least) so if you get down to the beach late you will have nowhere to sit or shelter from the sun. The sun loungers are hard and wooden with no padding. Extremely uncomfortable. The provided towels are tiny, thin, old, fraying with cartoon images of puppies on them. Not larger enough to dry off a small child with let alone spread on the sun lounger.

We stayed in a Family Duplex room which was very odd: the bathroom took up the entire ground level (sinks and vanity in the foyer, separate room with toilet, tub and shower. Shower had no doors so soaked the entire room and toilet). Stairs leading up to the sleeping area. Sleeping area was 2 king sized pallet beds - rock hard Vietnamese foam mattresses on the floor in one large room. Good AC. Walls in the sleeping area seem to be made of thin plywood panelling so we could hear every noise from the rooms on either side of us. Noisy Vietnamese neighbors on one side, noisy Brits on the other. There is a balcony but no view of the sea at all.

I would not have minded hard beach chairs or noisy neighbors if we had been paying Backpacker prices but at $250 per night it all felt like a massive rip off. The beach was full of infiltrating backpackers and day tripping Vietnamese. It was not quiet or exclusive or relaxing. At those prices it should have been. We paid similar prices for Victoria Hoi An and the experience was light years different.

Overall Cat Ba Island is a backpacker / down market destination. We had hoped this was a boutique style resort (as the price indicated) but instead it was ordinary to the point of bad. Never again. Better to stay in the backpacker hostels in town and come use the beach for free.

Restaurant food very poor, staff speak almost no English with the exception of one bartender and one front desk clerk.

If you must stay here book the beach front bungalows which at least have a view and a pair of very nice padded sun loungers on the small patio. There is very little privacy in these rooms however due to the hoards of locals coming through and taking selfies on the grounds.

    The town is equally uninspiring.

Hoi an or da nang beaches were far superior!!
    We won't be returning

we stayed here for 3 nights. The views out to sea are stunning and the beach is beautiful. We stayed in a beachfront bungalow which is quite basic and although the bathroom with the coconut shower is a novelty at first, after a day, we couldn't wait to get back to a 5 star hotel. It's a great place for backpackers but if you are a 5 star girl, as I am, don't expect too much. The breakfast was very basic too.
    Stunning views

We stayed for 5 nights. On our travels there, people commented that it was far too long to stay in Cat Ba. However we enjoyed our entire stay (minus a rainy day when there wasn't much to do). The bathroom is a nice novelty, although the stones hurt your feet if you're not careful. The room is just a bed, we struggled to fit our bags in as well as ourselves. However we didn't spend long in the room as Cat Ba is great to explore.

If you know what to expect though the place is stunning, with perfect sandy beaches and a great sea for swimming. Loved the beach front bar. The food is ok and the breakfast was a bit random (spaghetti... Not sure about it for breakfast). We would highly recommend the national park, a day trip around Ha Long bay, and the Cat Ba caves. Definitely rent (automatic) motorbikes to explore the island. We rented ours through the hotel.
Cute but not what I expected

Going to Cat Ba I wanted a resort where I could lay on the beach all day and tan. The bungalows available were nice and clean and the grounds were very small but quaint and quiet. However the beaches they have are small and isolated, the sand needs to be cleaned of hard shells every day. It offers a nice view but it's not sprawling beaching with lots of activities. There is a hostel on the site (separated) that plays music at night (although you can't really hear it from the resort side).

Although I enjoyed my time there it's not a five star resort. You have to call a taxi or walk to the town (up and down a few hills- but generally nice), they don't offer a lot of super fun activities during the day like an all inclusive resort, and the food is fair. Top shelf vodka is Smirinoff. I'm happy I went because instead of doing beach things I was able to do more adventure things (rock climbing, kayaking, through Asia Outdoors) but it's not a sit on the beach and relax place for me. I wanted more beach.
    Great location.. Small room

Hotel is fairly close to town.. It's easily walkable in about 15 mins. But it feels very secluded once you're in the resort.

We loved the beach..the resort itself is on a beautiful bay, with limestone karsts a few hundred meters out to sea. The beach bar area is really good too..

Room itself was very small.. There was actually far more space in the (outdoor) bathroom. But the circular verandah at the front had sun loungers and blinds we could close to create a separate "room". If I went again we'd probably go for the sea front cabins as these looked better equipped.

Breakfast was OK, and there are better restaurants in town than the one in the resort. Overall though we had a good experience here and would probably recommend it to others.
    Ok

We really wanted to use Cat Ba as a jumping off point to explore the less touristy areas of Lan Ha Bay. We were very happy with that choice, but if we did it again we probably would have shortened our visit from three nights to two.

We decided to stay at this hotel as it seemed the least worst option on an island that caters well for backpackers, but less well for people who prefer a nice boutique hotel. Seeing the other accommodation on the island, I am confident we chose well. The beach is lovely and kept very clean. It is not a private beach, and hence its serenity is subject to whoever is visiting that day.

The restaurant is fine, but not great. You can get better food in town if you're willing to take the pleasant 10-15 minute walk or pay for the shuttle van to bring you. The hotel's voucher and bracelet system is weird, but whatev, just go with it. You do get free entry to the cannon fort, which should not be missed for its gorgeous views of Lan Ha Bay.

Getting there from Hanoi isn't as bad as it's made out to be in guidebooks if you plan ahead. We had the hotel organise a driver to pick us up at our hotel in Hanoi and drop us at the Haiphong ferry terminal. The driver left us in the hands of a nice lady who helped us buy our tickets. From there, there are ferries (1 hour) and a hydrofoil (45 mins) to Cat Ba Town. When you get to Cat Ba Town, you ring the hotel and they send a driver to collect you. We took both the ferry and the hydrofoil. The hydrofoil is very small and there is nowhere to sit outside. We liked the ferry better, as we could sit out in the fresh air and enjoy the scenery more.

The rooms at the hotel are fine and well appointed, but not that well maintained and the whole place is showing its age a bit. I would definitely suggest the beachfront rooms, which are heaps better than the beach view ones. The bathrooms have loose stones for flooring - atmospheric, but really annoying and don't feel very clean.

The staff were reasonably friendly and helpful, but definitely not to the standard we experienced at other hotels in Vietnam, most of which also cost less than this one.
    an amazing location!

the cat ba beach resort is in an amazing spot. its is on the second beach (cat co cove 2). the room we had was a bungalow, it was so small! legitimately only fit the bed, one suitcase had to be kept outside in the bathroom (outdoor bathroom, amazing!) and the other on a shelf in the room. the location was good in that it was right on its own private beach... but we went in "winter" so it wasn't beach weather, i imagine it would be amazing in summer and hope to one day return in the summer so i can experience it again. it is quite a walk into town, up and down hill, not too strenuous but still. the breakfast was good, we got vouchers to use as well for a walk up to cannon fort and for kayak hire etc everyday. also a free drink at the beach bar every night! they use a bracelet system which i haven't seen before, so when you check in they give you a bracelet to wear for the duration of your stay. the staff were friendly and helpful when we requested help to organise a bus/speedboat ticket back to hanoi as well. the wifi was good, but the tv was difficult to use and took some working out. not sure if they do this all year round but we had a heater in our bungalow which was amazing to come home to after a cold day out.
    Nice location and bathrooms

    Bungalow sea view room.

The room is extremely small. We liked the outside bathroom.

    Breakfast OK, not great.

Hotel grounds were nicely cared for.

The system with bracelets and vouchers is too complex and unusual.

Ridiculous threats to guest in the room.

    Nice beach.
    Lovely Location

Great location and cute bungalows, perfect for couples
Showers are not always hot and the breakfast is often cold, especially the coffee and teas.
Wifi signal is hard to use as it often drops out, but this is understandable considering its location
A little overpriced for what you get, but such a fantastic and beautiful location
    Nice Location with nice Bungalows

This is probably the nicest place to stay on Cat Ba Island. It is located directly at the Cat Ba Co 2 beach and is alone in that bay. So it's really quiet and the facilities, garden and beach are clean and nice.

Breakfast buffet is good and the staff friendly.

It's a bit bureaucratic. You have to pick up your breakfast and drink voucher every day ...

You get every day 2 free drinks and a voucher to kayak or for the fort cannon entrance.

The weather was not that good in March so we were a bit disappointed.
